Irish Coast Guard

Posted on 7 Dec ’12

An image from a series of portraits shot for the Irish Coast Guard. This was a challenging shoot. The tide was rushing out and the wind was trying to knock over my lighting gear. But we got it done with the help and patience of these guys… and I love this image.

Clara Peters – Irish Figure Skater

Posted on 13 Jul ’12

An image from a shoot with Clara Peters, Irish figure skater. Clara began skating when she was 7 years old, and moved to the US to train at the age of 17. She has been there ever since. Like all sports, skating requires serious dedication and it’s beginning to pay off as this year she is ranked 29th at Worlds.  She is about to turn 21 and her aim now, as it has been since she was very little, is to become Ireland’s first ice skating competitor in a Winter Olympics – that of Sochi 2014. Let’s wish her some luck.

Simon’s Epic Global Cycle – for Epilepsy

Posted on 1 Jun ’12

Some still shots I also did when I filmed the mini-documentary of Simon Hutchinson which can be seen in the earlier post. Also a behind the scenes image. Simon is now travelling through the United States. Check out his website and facebook sites for more info. The race started in London on the 18th February last and won’t end until sometime in July. As of today, the 1st June 2012, Simon is currently cycling across the United States. It’s been a tough old slog at times with sickness in India that required hospitalisation, and a road traffic accident in Perth, Australia. BUT he’s still going and is making good headway. He’s totally on his own out there with no support other than the goodwill…

Jane Crow – Roller Derby Girl

Posted on 25 Jan ’12

This is Rhona ‘Crow Jane’ Flynn. She’s a skater and head coach with Cork City Firebirds. They are a flat-track roller derby league in Cork, Ireland. They train 4-5 days a week, about half on-skate, half off-skate. So yes they’re serious about the sport. In fact very serious. Crow Jane also skated on the Irish national team at the Roller Derby World Cup in Toronto in December 2011. Check out a recent story on them in the Irish Times about how they fared here. Roller Derby is a full-contact team sport, played on quad roller skates, on an oval track. Since the birth of the modern sport ten years ago, there have been over a thousand teams formed worldwide. In Ireland, there are teams…

An extra 200lbs of fuel for the wife & kids

Posted on 29 Nov ’11

” We add an extra 200 lbs of fuel for the wife and kids” Excuse me? Let’s rewind a bit. I photographed Senior Aircrewman, Alan Gallagher, last week. He’s an operational winchman and a winch operator with CHC Search & Rescue. In other words he’s the man who fishes you out of a raging sea or a wind-blown mountainside. The shoot took place at CHC Search and Rescue HQ,  Dublin Airport. CHC operate the largest commercial helicopter company in the world, and have been providing Search and Rescue services on behalf of the Irish Coast Guard since 2001. The images below were taken as part of a bigger photographic project I am working on. One of their biggest concerns on a sortie is fuel…

Derek Burnett- Olympic Shooter

Posted on 27 Sep ’11

There would be no escape. I was in a lonely field in Longford photographing a crack shot. If the images displeased him…well…..:)He’s Derek Burnett, an Irish sports shooter who specialises in the trap. A veteran of three Olympic games, his best ever finish being in Athens 2004, when he came in 9th overall.London 2012 now beckons. This is likely to be Derek’s last Olympics so definitely fingers crossed for him. He’s got great sense of humour too. Oh how he laughed when I looked at him expectantly, and told him I was looking for a hill.Hills in Longford! Ha! Well we did find one eventually. A little lump of a hill with a lonely old tree. In fact the area we were standing on…

Sports Photography-Elinchrom Ranger-Pocketwizard Hypersync-Canon & Nikon

Posted on 14 Jul ’11

Images below from a recent sportrait. The first image of Sue running towards me and  the second image of Sue standing was shot at 1/1000th sec. She is lit with one Elinchrom Ranger RX Speed AS  1100W power pack , an S light & the Maxi Lite reflector. Tom Bol, Photographer has been getting amazing sync speeds using his Nikon D300s.  Check out his blog here. As high as 1/8000th sec, but as a Canon user, I wanted to see what the 7d could do. Using the Canon 7d and the clever hypersync technology from pocketwizard I was able to shoot way above the normal sync speed of 1/25oth. I was operating at about the 5.7.to 6.1 power setting ( max is 7.5) Apparently…
